La han descrito como un “icono punk feminista de los 50 dibujada por un hombre de 20 años”. Eloise, la protagonista de los cuentos de Kay Thompson y Hilary Knight, la niña de padres invisibles que vive en el Plaza de Nueva York con su nanny inglesa, su perrito Weenie y su tortuga Skipperdee, es el personaje de ficción que más ha inspirado a Lena Dunham.

Tal como la niña lo describe en sus libros: un sombrerero que contiene chicles, rotuladores, comida para tortugas, gafas de sol, libretas, jabón y rótulos del Plaza que digan ‘No Molestar’”. El hotel también rentabilizó el éxito y su personal se volvió cómplice de la historia. Cuando los niños entraban al hotel preguntando por ella, siempre respondían: “Acaba de salir, pero si la ves, dile que se ha dejado sus zapatos”, y procedían a mostrar un par de zapatitos de charol negros, como los que luce Eloise. Además, montaron un garaje de triciclos como el del personaje, a disposición de sus huéspedes más pequeños y acondicionaron una habitación a su medida, en la que una actriz disfrazada de Nanny guiaba a los visitantes. Knight cedió al Plaza un retrato de la niña que todavía hoy cuelga en su famoso Salón de las Palmeras.
